Chris Shuba

When the financial crisis of 2008 struck, it became obvious that a quantitative, emotionless approach to asset management was the clearest path to success in the modern market. After spending time at Ameriprise Financial and as Senior Quant Analyst at Columbia Threadneedle, Chris Shuba focused on developing mathematical models that could help financial advisors mitigate the volatility of the market.

In 2014, Shuba joined Westlake, Grahl & Glover as Chief Investment Officer, where he put to use a series of algorithms he designed. These models were met with immediate interest by a broad range of clients, and within the year, financial advisors nationwide were clamoring for access to his algorithms.

Soon thereafter, he founded Helios Quantitative, LLC.  Shuba is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Chief Compliance Officer (COO) at Helios.  Today, Helios influences the assets of advisors that collectively manage over $9 billion.

In 2015, Shuba was named the greater Sacramento Area’s “Face of Investing” by Sacramento Magazine. He is a regular speaker and contributor at industry events hosted by the likes of State Street, JP Morgan, and more.

Shuba holds a BS in business finance and law from the Opus School of Business at the University of St. Thomas, and holds a FINRA Series 7, and has completed the Level 1 CFA.

Joe Mallen

Joe Mallen joined Helios Quantitative, LLC, in 2016, taking on the responsibilities of quantitative research and managing client relationships. He currently holds the position of Chief Investment Officer (CIO). Mallen is steadfast in his belief that the future of the investment advisor industry begins with cost effective and risk-managed solutions for clients. Like Shuba, he hopes to enable financial advisors to be competitive by providing them with institutional level market research.

Before joining Helios Quantitative, Mallen was Chief Investment Officer at Sawtooth Solutions, a senior analyst at Columbia Threadneedle, and served as vice president at AI Exchange, LLC, and Mount Yale Capital Group, LLC. He has been published in several journals and quoted by major news outlets.

Mallen holds a masters in finance with a concentration in quantitative finance from London Business School and a BSB in finance from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
